199. Katie Taylor on Having Hard Conversations with Our Kids

We are discussing a topic we’ve never really talked about before. And that is how to have the really hard conversations with our kids. In this episode we cover topics like death, funerals, losing a pet, and what to do when our child has completely lost it at an appointment.

Our guest, Katie Taylor, is a certified child life specialist with over 12 years of experience. She supports kids and their families as they navigate challenging life events. Today, Katie explains to us that having  hard talks with our kiddos is a learned skill and why it is one that is so important to develop.

In this conversation Katie gives us her tips on whether or not we should tell our kids the truth about what to expect in an upcoming appointment. She also walks us through what age appropriate conversations around the death of a pet or a close family member sound like and gives suggestions on the appropriate language to use to help explain these events to our kids. We both took so much away from our chat with Katie and know you will too!
